Planned in the mid-nineteenth century on the orders of Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour primarily to ensure safe navigation, Santa Margherita Ligure harbour has evolved into one of Italy’s most important yachting marinas, without losing sight of its original purpose.

Here, the moors and services provided by the City and by a number of private enterprises can accommodate about 600 vessels of different sizes and types, ranging from gozzi, traditional small wooden boats of Liguria, to fishing vessels, sailboats and maxi-yachts.

The facilities and constructions built over the years have equipped the harbour with everything required by passengers disembarking cruise ships, many of which anchor off Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino as a result of a policy of promoting development of cruise tourism.

The landing hosts prestigious sailing competitions in spring and fall, when sports and society events come together in an appealing and highly successful formula.

Visitors strolling along the quay in the morning will be sure to see fishing boats unloading their catch, including the famous Santa Margherita red prawn.
